Wayne Price Presents Value of Radical Theory @bluestockings March 2nd 8pm

Posted on February 27th, 2013 in AK Authors!, Events

Join Wayne Price for the release of his new book, “The Value of Radical Theory: An Anarchist Introduction to Marx’s Critique of Political Economy,” premised on the idea that anarchism is essential for a program for a post-capitalist economy, but that Marx’s critique is useful for understanding how capitalism works today – including understanding the current crisis. Price will lead a discussion on how anarchists can use Marx’s economic theory as part the framework to usher in an era of collective, participatory control of the economy, inspired by anarchist political and ethical traditions. Wayne Price is a long-time revolutionary and activist, and the author of “The Abolition of the State: Anarchist & Marxist Perspectives” and “Anarchism & Socialism: Reformism or Revolution?”

How does the radical refusal of the mainstream codification of LGBTQ identity as a new gender norm come into focus in the context of anarchist theory and practice? Gayge Operaista will discuss the dire need to both provide explicitly queer perspectives on the class struggle and to reinvigorate a working class movement for queer liberation. Hexe will discuss power in BDSM and the anarchist movement.

Queering Anarchism @bluestockings February 28th 7pm

Posted on February 11th, 2013 in AK Authors!, Events

Please join Queering Anarchism contributors Benjamin Shepard, Saffo Papantonopoulou, and Jason Lydon as they discuss their chapters in Queering Anarchism: Addressing and Undressing Power and Desire.

What does it mean to “queer” the world around us? How does the radical refusal of the mainstream codification of GLBT identity as a new gender norm come into focus in the context of anarchist theory and practice? How do our notions of orientation inform our politics—and vice versa? Queering Anarchism brings together a diverse set of writings, ranging from the deeply theoretical to the playfully personal, that explore the possibilities of the concept of “queering,” turning the dominant, and largely heteronormative, structures of belief and identity entirely inside out. Ranging in topic from the economy to disability, politics, social structures, sexual practice, interpersonal relationships, and beyond, the authors here suggest that queering might be more than a set of personal preferences—pointing toward the possibility of an entirely new way of viewing the world.

Eric Laursen of the People’s Pension February 19th 6:30pm All Souls Unitarian Church

Posted on February 11th, 2013 in AK Authors!, Events

Eric Laursen author of The People’s Pension: The Struggle to Defend Social Security Since Reagan will be speaking at All Souls Unitarian Church in Manhattan.

Social Security, not for nothing do politicians call it the “third rail of American politics—touch it, and you die.” Yet a powerful, well-funded movement to phase out Social Security or even privatize it has been gathering strength since the election of Ronald Reagan. Each time it comes close to succeeding, it’s beaten back by a coalition of labor, grassroots organizers, and the elderly. Meanwhile, Social Security has only become more vital to retirees and their families as the federal and state governments slash other benefits and services—a trend that’s grown ever more troubling in recent years.
